Images often say more than a thousand words...
I am trying here to illustrate how the creators of the Voynich Manuscript might have proceeded. To do this, I have recreated the outlines in vectors, mirrored and compared them. Interesting matches and recurring structures can be identified. A complete analysis of all these observations would be very time-consuming, but possibly also illuminating. From my perspective as a graphic artist and web developer, a possible workflow could have consisted of first subtly tracing stencils or templates and then individually adjusting the outlines. Only after that could the coloring have taken place. I also recreated this possible workflow with the text in order to better understand how such a way of working might have functioned. Without the original matrix and stencil, it is almost impossible to reproduce a text exactly. However, combining various building blocks creates a great many possible variants – additionally influenced by the human factor.
If a flexible stencil is pressed onto an uneven and flexible surface, the resulting script or line may initially appear straight. Subsequent changes, such as removing the tensioning (Ramen) of the parchment, or if it is pressed flat, could cause the originally straight script to appear distorted and curved. This effect suggests that a stencil or similar aid may have been used in the production.
